Home Improvement Started with Disaster

After a long hiatus in home improvement, I've finally ventured out to get small things done again.  I started with tackling a small powder room since the area urgently needed some attention, but also it seemingly was the easiest area to work on.

I spent a lot of time planning out and designing the interior and painstakingly chose the material and paint color, but made the big mistake of hiring a cheap contractor on the fly.  With the shortage of workers right now, it's awfully hard to find people unless one is willing to wait and wait, and me thinking that a simple job such as installing a powder room wouldn't be so difficult, I was definitely wrong with my assumption.

The one day installation turned into three days, and while the actual worker was very hard working and courteous, the wrinkly contractor twice my age decided that he should hit on me and designated himself as my "boyfriend."  It was as close to hell as I could tolerate for about three days of non stop harassment without murdering anyone, and finally when the work was finished I tipped the worker that did all the work and got the contractor out of my hair as fast as I could.

At the end of the project, I'm left with a house full of trash, scratched up marble tiles from installation, a wall sconce that stopped working properly and a leaky sink!  I'm trying to assess the damage and decided that I would be better off cutting the losses and have a professional plumber over to check things out and maybe take my wall sconce to a lighting store and have them fix it somehow...  I would also need to figure out how to buff the marble tile and clean up the grout that they splashed paint all over on.  It's such endless headache and I just feel pretty defeated at the end of day.

Well, disaster or not, I've got the first project started and it's a big reminder to find reliable contractors for the reminder of the renovation.  There are still more things to work on beyond fixing the disaster that I'm left with like adding a couple more hardware such as the towel ring and a little glass shelf that will go in between the medicine cabinet and the sink.  I'm also getting my carpenter in to take a look to rework the door sill and moulding and then it should be a wrap for this powder room.  A fine example of how a supposedly one day project turned into weeks.

  1. Oh no! I'm so very sorry this happened to you! Especially the harassment, and "boyfriend" title, talk about cringe! I hope things work out for you!

Coincidentally, my husband and I were talking about redoing our guest bathroom the other day and have some tentative plans, however we have a few other priorities around the house. Like you, we too are struggling to find someone who is willing to do the jobs, which some have said are too small, despite it including rebuilding a wall!

    1. It's absolutely cringe! People are out of their mind sometimes. I'd say definitely find a contractor that has good skills because I regret picking a cheap one and now I have to redo the whole floor unfortunately. Best of luck on the bathroom redo, it sounds very exciting!!
